Pre-Marital Counseling Classes

Planning to get married in the next 6–12 months?

If so, check out Summit Church’s biblically based Premarital Class and Counseling ministry.  It is designed to provide essential training and counseling for engaged couples planning to get married within the next 6–12 months.  For engaged couples at our University Campus desiring to have a Summit Pastor officiate your wedding ceremony or to use Summit facilities for your wedding and/or reception venue, successful completion of this class and counseling is necessary.

There are two main facets of this ministry, 6 classroom group sessions and the assignment of a marriage mentor couple to mentor and coach their assigned couple.

The instruction consists of 6 class sessions, each class is 2 hours long and will be offered at the University Campus in the Activity Room/ K-1 Room on Thursday evenings twice a year (normally February to March and September to October).   Typically, there are 4 – 5 other engaged couples attending the class sessions where we walk through curriculum based on the Bible and the two books, Tying the Knot by Rob Green and The Meaning of Marriage by Tim and Kathy Keller.

The personalized mentoring and coaching part of the ministry is accomplished by assigning a trained Marriage Mentor couple to each engaged couple to spend a minimum of two 1:1 counseling sessions with you at a mutually convenient time and place. Typically, mentors meet 3 – 4 times to present and cover the customized results of the Prepare-Enrichment Couple Report.

Registration is $250 and includes a Prepare-Enrich Assessment Report, the class curriculum, and 2 books for each person.

Costa Rica Mission Trip

Costa Rica Mission Trip

By Kate McCartney

God’s prevailing love and abundant grace extends far past the confines of any person or place, rather all the way to the ends of the Earth. From March 4th-11th, an IGNITE team of 12 set out with one of Summit’s closest partners, Ride Nature, to Guanacaste, Costa Rica. In our time there, we worked in ministry and outreach and with awestruck wonder, we saw firsthand how the Lord, through the Holy Spirit, connects people beyond language barriers and unlikely occurrences. The majority of the week was spent in Tamarindo, where we served in various capacities for Casa Vida Church, volunteering in kid’s ministry, painting, and working at a feeding center. We also participated in skate and surf outreach and helped in classrooms at Flourish Children’s School. Later in the week, we traveled to Liberia, where we served alongside YWAM Liberia and connected with children through worship and one student sharing their testimony. Over the course of each unique opportunity, it was incredible to witness how God formed relationships through and within us and our ministry partners.

We were strengthened and held accountable by the unity among the team throughout the duration of the week. Walking in newfound relationships with one another, we were able to see glimpses of the individual ways God was stretching all of us. On the trip, there was a common theme of growing in boldness, through sharing the gospel, but by also having a constant, mindful heart posture of openness to what it was that God had for us in every circumstance and conversation. As we prayerfully asked Him to use us as a vessel in serving others, He revealed Himself to us in ventures that were unexpected and at times, uncomfortable. However, the team was forever changed as a result of the radical power of the Holy Spirit and the ways it was demonstrated to us and through us. This was yet another reminder that the Lord has a divine purpose for each of our lives and sees us all as a vital part of His body.

The formidable truth that we serve a God who created all things, yet, out of love, chose us to steward the good news of His gospel, was eminently clear in the means by which He was working in Costa Rica. Through being able to experience the breathtaking beauty of God’s creation in another part of the world, we were humbly reminded that without Jesus we are capable of nothing. It is with a daily dependence, reliance, and regard for our Holy Creator, that we might look more like His Son and less like ourselves. This was especially prevalent as we sought to mindfully lay down our comfort zones, judgements, and expectations. Every student who took part in this trip walked away with a deeper reverence for the Lord’s glory, passion for proclamation of the Gospel, and stronger personal relationship with Christ and those within His body.

See student testimonies and photo gallery below!

I came to Costa Rica with an expectant heart; desperate for His presence to lead and guide myself and our team. I prayed for opportunities to be the hands and feet of Jesus to the people we encountered & for Him to reveal the gifts He’s given me to serve His people. He faithfully answered those prayers, and I gained confidence and assurance in the passions and pursuits He’s placed in me. I came home excited about where the Lord is leading and grateful that He is continuing to provide spaces for me to be used for the building up of His body and kingdom.
— Kennadie P.
I was immensely blessed with the opportunity to serve alongside Ride Nature this past week and to witness our Ignite students serve the Lord in Costa Rica. I went into this trip expectant and left overjoyed and encouraged by the Lord’s obvious hand. He orchestrated the group, grew us in servanthood, provided words to say and opportunities to pray and share the word.
— Emily L.
Going to Costa Rica was such a powerful experience. Seeing God’s people come together from across nations throughout this mission really put the magnitude of the Lord’s strength and love for us into perspective. This trip was filled with answered prayers and constant reminders that the Lord has chosen and equipped us to share the good news of the gospel.

Cultural Apologetics Class

Comment

Cultural Apologetics Class

Since the inception of the church of Jesus Christ, skeptics and non-believers have made critiques and challenges against Christianity. While the specifics have changed throughout history, time, and cultures, followers of Christ have always found a way to respond. This is the task of Cultural Apologetics—the church's gentle, respectful, and reasonable defense of the hope we have in Christ.

Join us for Summit's Cultural Apologetics class, where you will be equipped to respond to some of the challenges facing the church today in our current cultural moment. We will address the claims that Christianity is too rigid, too racist, too repressive, or too ridiculous. The aim is to train the church with a model of cultural engagement that will enable us to better represent the gospel to every man, woman, and child. We hope to see you there!

Spring Break Mission Trip

Spring Break Mission Trip

By Jason Udden

Last week, during FGCU’s Spring Break, two teams from IGNITE consisting of 34 students traveled to New York to serve alongside two of our church partners: Missio Church in Syracuse and Restoration Church in Buffalo. Our desire was that students would grow in their personal intimacy with God as well as their understanding and participation in the mission of God to reach every man, woman, and child with the gospel.

Upon our arrival we engaged in evangelism trainings and began to learn more about both the context of the cities we were in and their desperate need for Jesus. Almost immediately our team was engaging children, youth, college students, and the impoverished with God’s love and God’s word. Each encounter presented new questions and challenges that stretched and grew us. The pastors and staff of Missio and Restoration (some consisting of former Summit pastors) were helpful to encourage and equip us throughout the week.

As the trip unfolded we were able to participate in prayer walks around the city, serve local partners, and visit other ministries and churches with completely different cultures and contexts than we were used to. Firsthand, we were able to witness that God’s mission reaches far beyond FGCU and Southwest Florida. The Lord used this trip to encourage us and to strengthen us. We were reminded how God has uniquely gifted each one of us to love and serve His church where we live, work, and play.

See student testimonies and photo gallery below!

Seeing how receptive people were to hearing the gospel really encouraged me to share it more! I loved how the Lord was able to work through me to share His truth!
— Isa M.
Throughout this entire trip I felt and saw the Lord working in my life in ways like never before. The Lord gave me a new found confidence in evangelism and sharing the good news of the gospel. This trip showed me how important it is to spread the word and how much a simple conversation can change someone’s life.
— Ben P.
The reason why I wanted to go to Syracuse, New York was because I wanted to grow in my confidence and knowledge in sharing the gospel with others. The trip surpassed all my expectations! My love for ministry grew 1,000 times more and it also ignited my passion for prayer! My confidence in the Lord has changed so much because of this trip and I’m so thankful to have had this opportunity to serve other college students, people that I met on the street, and also my friends that I served with.
— Isabel M.
Going into this years trip to Buffalo, I was asking the Lord to reveal himself to me in a new way. Through hearing the testimony of Jabra at Compass Care, speaking with students at University at Buffalo, and praying with one another, God not only exceeded my expectations but also reminded me of how He can redeem even our most broken pieces to further His kingdom and that it is only through Him that we are given new life.

Summit Students Wake Recap

Summit Students Wake Recap

By Chelsea Carson

This past weekend I had the opportunity to participate in Wake, a weekend retreat for Summit Students. I have been to a handful of these weekends and every year I am overwhelmed by the work I see God do. In our leader meeting this year some of the returning leaders were asked to give insight to what the weekend is all about. With confidence I was able to say that Wake is one of my favorite weekends of the year. It is filled with fun games, no sleep, awesome worship, great messages, and most importantly seeing what God will do in the lives of the students in attendance. The message this weekend surrounded the idea of what it means to serve the Lord and what we as Christians are called to be. One of the verses from this weekend was Philippians 2:4, which says, “Let each of you look not only to his own interest, but also to the interest of others.” What I loved most about this weekend was not only did the students sit and hear this message, they were able to put it into practice.

Mixed in with the games and the fun of the weekend, we took the students down to Harlem Heights to help a community that is still recovering from the impacts of Hurricane Ian. I was blown away by what I saw. Instead of seeing students complain that on their fun weekend with friends they had to work, they made the best of it. I saw students enjoying their time helping people who needed it.The students were walking the neighborhood picking trash up, digging holes, helping people with their yards, and really just being a gospel presence in the community. Every time I saw a student be asked to help in some way their answer, without hesitation, was always yes. I think we sometimes forget that our willingness to do things that we don’t necessarily want to is a direct result of the Lord's work on our hearts. We are not people who naturally want to help, we tend to want to do what is best for us. But, I saw God help these students to push past that selfishness and extend a helping hand. I saw God changing the hearts of the students and I saw them recognizing that because of the great sacrifice the Lord made for us, we are called to love one another.

This weekend I was encouraged by the countless smiles I saw on the faces of these students as they were doing work that isn't necessarily enjoyable. I saw the Lord shift these students' perspective on what it truly means to serve the community and by doing that serving the Lord. I was encouraged by the kindness I saw extended to each other. I saw many new friendships form and develop. Within my own small group we had conversations that lead to better understanding of God’s call for our lives. I am thankful to be a part of a church that calls their people to be more like God. A church that gives opportunities to students to tangibly represent the Gospel to every man, woman, and child. I am grateful for leaders who are willing to meet these students where they are and show them all that God has for them. All in all, this weekend reminded me of how good our God is and I am beyond grateful I got to be a part of it.

Mission Partner Update from Thailand

In the fall, Prosperous Youth Foundation (PYF) hosted two 4-day camps for students in our ministry network. Our team worked tirelessly yet again to create a safe and welcoming space for young people to experience camp. This year, God truly humbled me as I reflected on the impacts in the lives of so many students that we work with.

One of our camp counselors, Top, has cerebral palsy. At the start of camp I was excited that he was serving and I remember thinking about how great it was that he was able to be part of our team.

There is a special time during camp where students can meet with their camp counselors to learn more about Jesus and pray. I remember looking over and seeing Top sitting with a student, fervently praying with him. I saw God powerfully using Top, a boy with so many challenges, to love and share the good news of Jesus. In that moment God showed me how he can use anyone despite their situation or challenges.

Each of the students that attended camp this year were able to hear the Gospel and learn more about a God that loves them, values them, and knows them.

This year, 49 students made decisions to follow Jesus and seek a relationship with Him. Another 42 students made a decision to join Telos, a student leadership program that provides training and support to students desiring to serve their community.

While "camp" to me sometimes feels chaotic, loud, and tiring, I'm glad God continues to remind me that He will use anyone and any situation to love and care for his children.

Romans: The Gospel of God's Power

Comment

Romans: The Gospel of God's Power

SERIES OVERVIEW

Powerless—utterly devoid of strength, resources, authority, and the capacity to effect change. It’s the overwhelming sense of being helpless and a feeling we all innately despise. Yes, we hate being weak, vulnerable, and defenseless. We would much rather be self-sufficient, depending on our own strength, wisdom, and abilities. We spend most of our lives striving to reach this position—independence from parents and institutions, financial freedom and wealth, and the ability to do what we want and when we want it. All because we hate being powerless. And the truth is, we are competent enough to achieve most things in life. We have the capacity to accumulate knowledge, strength, influence, and wealth— yes, we can attain power. But there is one predicament in life that all humans, regardless of their effort, will always remain powerless to change—the plight of sin and the ability to save ourselves from its consequences.

Make no mistake about it—the consequences of sin are far-reaching and affect us all (Rom. 3:23). Instead of relationship, there's hostility; instead of blessing, curse; instead of order, chaos. And instead of life, there is the fate we all must eventually face—death itself (Rom. 6:23). No one can escape its frightful grip. It will always overpower and overcome us. The only hope we have against this powerful foe is to embrace the power of another—the very one whom we rejected and rebelled against in our sin—the one who alone has the authority and power to defeat death and give life. This is the good news of the gospel: "it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes" (Rom. 1:16). It is the announcement to a defenseless and helpless world that "while we were still weak...Christ died for the ungodly," and that his death provides "life for all men" (Rom. 5:6,18). And yet this hope only comes to those who embrace their weakness and throw themselves upon to the mercy of God in Christ.

The gospel is incredibly easy to understand and articulate––it's the good news of Jesus Christ–– but on the other hand, it's vastly complex–– it's extensive and sweeping in breadth and depth. That's part of what makes the gospel so beautiful. It's simple enough for a child to comprehend but profound enough for the greatest minds to spend a lifetime mining its depths. The Apostle Paul understood this reality. He could define it in a single statement as the truth "that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures" (1 Cor. 15:3), or he could write an entire doctrinal treatise on the subject matter. And this is precisely what he does in his letter to the Romans. As one pastor comments, Romans is "the fullest, plainest and grandest statement of the gospel in the New Testament."1 It’s why the great Reformer, Martin Luther, could boldly claim the letter as the "chief part of the New Testament," not only worthy of being memorized but whose contents Christians should engage with "every day, as the daily bread of the soul."2 Indeed, the contents of this letter may be the most consequential for Christians to understand, believe, and apply to their lives.

Join us for our new teaching series as we study the book of Romans and consider "The Gospel of God's Power." Together we will explore the meaning and depth of the gospel, not only as the truth that saves us but also as the power which transforms who we are and how we live. Its implications are far- reaching, from how we worship, love, and serve within the church to how we engage a broken and evil world in need of the same good news. As we marvel once again at the simple yet complex jewel of the gospel captured in this letter, we will join the Apostle Paul and the saints throughout the ages in declaring: "Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways! For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen" (Rom. 11:33,36).

Fall Retreat Recap

Fall Retreat Recap

Originally planned for the weekend of September 30th, the anticipation of the Ignite College Ministry’s Fall Retreat was at its highest when Hurricane Ian made landfall on Florida just days before — ultimately forcing it to be cancelled. The retreat was rescheduled for the weekend of December 9th and as we waited, it became all too easy at times for me to question God’s plan in all of this. But God's good purpose was quickly revealed as over 120 of us packed into our cars and headed towards this long-awaited weekend in Sarasota.

Pastor Ike Todd of New Creation Fellowship, opened the retreat teaching that the power of God’s presence brings renewal. This was the theme for this year's retreat, renewal. For many students, renewal came in the form of gathering and spending time with other believers. For some it came simply by getting a chance to rest at the end of a long and tiring semester. And still for others, the power of God’s word brought spiritual renewal they didn't realize they needed. It was on our second night, that Pastor Ike, read from Matthew 7 and challenged us with a question that pierced into the hearts of many. "It's all about Jesus. Will you place your faith in him or will you merely be fascinated by him?". It was these words that caused many students to re-evaluate their position with God. That some are in love not with Christ, but with the idea of him.

On Sunday morning, we celebrated as nineteen students were baptized, two of which gave their lives to Christ for the first time! We even got to hear one individuals’ grace story of "returning home" after a difficult season in their walk with God. Please pray that this experience would not merely bring us a weekend of renewal in His presence but a lifetime of it!

Written by Michael Lee

Fall Retreat taught me that true growth in your life comes from growing in your intimacy with God. This weekend was a reminder that it is better to live a day in his courts than a thousand living in the world. We’ve got it made!
— Crewe B.
Before this trip I knew what I believed but was always scared to step into the fullness that is Christ. My fears definitely held me back in many ways and I only trusted Him with certain parts of my life. Throughout this weekend, I learned about the confidence that we have in the Lord and how present He is in our lives. That He is not only worthy to be praised but worthy to be trusted.
— Becca J.
Renewal, the theme of Fall Retreat was evident throughout the weekend and obviously ordained by God. Multiple students surrendered their lives to Jesus for the first time, being born again, and many others declared their faith in Jesus through baptism. The response to the Spirit among our students was a blessing to witness and a encouragement that the Lord is still renewing souls!
— Emily L.
This year was my last fall retreat but I wouldn’t have wanted to end it any other way. Being able to see friends I have walked alongside for years renew their walks with Christ and commit their lives fully to Him was so sweet to witness. It personally convicted me to step into callings the Lord has put on my life for quite some time. I’m so thankful for this ministry and how it serves our great God and pushes us to consistently pursue Him and the glory of His will for our lives.

Understanding Christian Joy

UNDERSTANDING CHRISTIAN JOY

‘TIS THE SEASON

The turkey, stuffing, gravy, and all-things-pumpkin-related are now officially behind us, which can only mean one thing: the Christmas season is officially here! Cue the Hallmark movies, hot chocolate, lights, trees, and for us here in Southwest Florida—artificial snow and faux fireplaces. While the Christmas season and its many traditions undeniably stir up many nostalgic and sentimental feelings, one particular word or sentiment seems to capture the season best: JOY! After all, “Tis the season to be jolly.” This phrase summarizes what many believe this season should produce in us—high spirits, happiness, laughter, and an overall disposition of good cheer.

To say that the theme of joy saturates the pages of the Bible is a vast understatement. The word itself occurs over 150 times[1], but when you include other terms associated with it––such as rejoicing––we find nearly 400 references spanning both the Old and New Testaments [2] and every major literary genre in the Bible. But as pastor and author Matt Smethurst recognizes, joy is "far from being a peripheral subtheme in Scripture," it is "the heartbeat of God."[3] If this is true about him, and the Christmas season aims to aid us in embracing this joy, we should endeavor to understand this word while rejecting its many cheap imitations.

But understanding exactly what joy is or defining it in specific terms is a complicated process. It is used throughout Scripture to describe the emotional feeling that springs forth from favorable circumstances while also anchoring it to a state of mind or an orientation of the heart that is secure, stable, and unchanging. Capturing the essence of this word may be difficult, but perhaps it is best to say that joy is a settled emotional state of contentment, confidence, and hope found in Jesus Christ, produced by the Holy Spirit, and cultivated by intimacy with God. Let's explore this definition as we strive to embrace the joy that God so graciously extends to us this Christmas season.

CHRISTIAN JOY IS FOUND IN JESUS CHRIST

One of the remarkable aspects of Jesus that the New Testament writers repeatedly affirm throughout the Gospels is the fact that he was a man defined by joy. Angels announced his birth as "good news of great joy (Lk. 2:10). His coming inaugurates the kingdom of God here on earth—a kingdom described as one of joy (Rom. 14:17). His joyful exuberance led many to falsely claim that he was a glutton and a drunkard (Lk. 7:34). He rejoiced in the Holy Spirit (Lk. 10:21), and his parables often described the joy of his ministry (Lk. 15:3-7). And finally, it was the joy of Jesus that led him to endure the suffering of the cross (Heb. 12:2). Jesus was a man of "deep, habitual joy,"[4] and it is this very joy that he now invites us to experience.

In the Upper Room Discourse, Jesus tells his disciples that all of his teachings had a singular aim: "that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full" (Jhn. 15:11). The words of Jesus are an invitation for his disciples to experience the fullness of joy. But his invitation moves beyond the human realm and into the divine domain. The same joy that Jesus has experienced from eternity past, which characterized his earthly ministry, he now extends to his followers—"the very joy of the Son of God poured into our souls."[5] Christian joy is ultimately distinguished by its source, for Jesus is not only the object of our joy; he is its essence. As John Piper describes it, "Christ not only offers himself as the divine object of my joy, but pours his capacity for joy into me, so that I can enjoy him with the very joy of God."[6]

CHRISTIAN JOY IS PRODUCED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT

The Christian's joy is found in Christ—his very joy dwelling in us—but it is experienced by the power of the Holy Spirit. In the same way that Jesus rejoiced in the Spirit (Lk. 10:21), Christians today are dependent upon his enabling presence to receive the gift of joy. This is why the Apostle Paul can speak of the joy of Christ as being from the Spirit. He writes that the Thessalonian church "received the word in much affliction, with the joy of the Holy Spirit" (1 Thess. 1:6). He tells the Roman church that the kingdom of God "is not a matter of eating and drinking but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit” (Rom. 14:17). In his letter to the Galatians, he describes joy as a “fruit of the Spirit” (Gal. 5:22)—a godly attribute or character that can never be attained by mere human effort.[7]

The Dictionary of Biblical Imagery rightly asserts, “Joy is not found by seeking it as an end in itself. It must be given by God.”[8] If Christians are to experience the joy of Christ, it must be produced by the empowering presence of the Spirit. The joy of Christ is made readily available to Christians who live by the Spirit, allowing him to bear the fruit of joy in their hearts by faith. Any efforts to drum up joy in our own strength will only be met by frustration, needless striving, and ultimately, failure and utter defeat. The settled state of contentment, confidence, and hope promised by joy will be replaced by dread, sorrow, and despair. Instead, we are invited to allow "the God of all hope" to "fill you with all joy...in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope" (Rom 15:13).

CHRISTIAN JOY IS CULTIVATED BY INTIMACY

Jesus pours his joy into our souls, the Spirit produces it within us, but it must be continually cultivated as we pursue intimacy with God as our greatest treasure. As Jerry Bridges wisely comments, “True Christian joy is both a privilege and a duty.”[9] Yes, joy is a gift given to us by Jesus—received by faith and experienced by his empowering presence—but we also find that “worship evokes it, obedience discovers it, and work fosters it.”[10] While this duty may seemingly contradict the Spirit’s role in producing joy in us, we must recognize that our ability to cultivate it is in and of itself a work of God. As Paul writes to the Philippian church, "work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure" (Phil. 2:12–13).

Our role in receiving the joy of Christ is made quite clear in the Upper Room Discourse. Using the allegory of a vineyard, Jesus declares that he is the vine, his Father is the divine gardener, and we are simply branches that bear the fruit of the vine (Jhn. 15:1-2). What is our role as branches in this process? Jesus describes it in a single phrase—“Abide in me” (Jhn. 15:4-5). To abide simply means to remain, stay, or continually dwell. It means we willfully and purposefully make choices that position us to continue to receive the life and nutrients that flow from the sap of the vine. In essence, it refers to the various means of grace we utilize to cultivate our intimacy with God, which in turn enable us to receive his gift of joy freely as his Spirit works within us.

EXPERIENCING CHRISTIAN JOY

Beloved, are you unsatisfied with the fleeting and momentary offerings of this world? Christian joy offers you contentment that will satisfy your hungry and thirsty soul. Are you anxious or worried about the uncertainty of the future? Christian joy gives you confidence to continue trusting in the faithfulness of God, even as you face the unknown. Has the suffering and pain of this world driven you to despair? Christian joy provides an anchor that keeps you tethered to the unwavering hope provided for us in the gospel.

Receive today what the Triune God has so generously given to you: a settled emotional state of contentment, confidence, and hope found in Jesus Christ, produced by the Holy Spirit, and cultivated by intimacy with God.

Don’t settle for anything less this Christmas season.
