Forum on Human Trafficking

We see it on the news and read about it on social media…the issue of human trafficking has become not just a growing concern but an unavoidable conversation. The state of Florida in general and this area of SWFL in particular is a geographical region that is especially affected with recent reports stating that human trafficking has increased by over 50% in the past year.

The growing statistics leave us all wondering what we can do? How can we help? What would it look like for the church to more actively and intentionally engage in the fight for the lives and protection of vulnerable people? How can the church lead the way in rescuing victims? What would it look like for the church in SWFL to rise up and not just make a dent in the industry, but eradicate it altogether? How can we strategically assist ministries that are already working hard to end this travesty?

Come join us at a Forum on February 26th as we discuss these kinds of questions. Find out what exactly trafficking is, what is being done to stop it, and how the church can engage in standing up against it.

We will have our ministry partners Wings of Shelter and Porchlight with us to educate, equip and present opportunities with which we can engage in as the church of Jesus.

Come and learn how we can lead the way in bringing Christ’s light and redemption to the darkness.

Go Love

GL_4x6Card.jpg

At the start of every year, Summit Student Ministries goes away for a long weekend for intentional discipleship training. This retreat away from home has become known as GO/LOVE. With an emphasis on passionately pursuing God and growing relationally with their peers, the students who attend GO/LOVE this year will be challenged to live out a life that glorifies God.

DETAILS

Depart from our University Campus at 5pm on Friday, Jan. 13th (19601 Ben Hill Griffin Pkwy Ft. Myers 33913)

Travel by bus to Lake Placid Camp & Conference Center

Return to Summit Church 12pm Sunday, Jan. 15th

Cost $99

All meals are provided. Students do not need to bring extra money.

You might not think two nights away from home would be enough time for a teenager to be affected and moved to live a gospel-centered life. However, many of the students who attended in past years, have caught the vision and left GO/LOVE excited to share with their friends and family all that God had taught them.

GO/LOVE has become an exciting retreat that students look forward to each and every year. It’s a time where our middle and high school students can get away and unplug and seek the Father and His desire for their lives. GO/LOVE is a trip that comes and goes in the blink of an eye, but it stays with you for a lifetime.

Revive Us

The busyness and cares of life make it all to easy to lose sight of the plans and purposes of God. But if we open our eyes to see the activity of God in our lives, it causes us to remember how He has come through for us in the past. And as we see his activity and remember all he's done, we arm ourselves with the faith to believe that God will continue to come through on our behalf and for his glory. This is why we come together. To be reacquainted with the presence and purposes of God.

Join us for a time of reflection and refreshing as we see, remember and believe that God is ever present, ever faithful, always trustworthy. October 9th-12th, beginning at 6:30pm each night. Hosted by our University Campus.

Gospel Forum - The Gospel and Race

UPDATE: Here's the video of our first Forum.

THE GOSPEL AND RACE

Join us at 6pm on Sunday evening, September 18th at our University Campus for our first Gospel Forum.

The gospel is the good news of salvation and transformation. In the Bible, we read that “in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ” (Eph 2:13). This unparalleled truth is at the core of the gospel message.  We were alienated because of our sin, but God has overcome our hostility toward him and welcomed us in through the Savior, Jesus Christ.  This is the good news that we herald! The gospel truly does have the power to change everything. But do we know what this really means? Do we know how far the gospel reaches in addressing the brokenness of our lives and the world we live in?

Its because of questions like these, and many others, that we are putting into place a forum to come together so we can discuss and wrestle with gospel realities and how they speak to every facet of life, such as race, gender, class, etc.  The first of these forums will be on Sunday evening, September 18th and it will address the topic of the gospel and race.

In Revelation 5, we read that Christ is worthy of praise because “by [his] blood [he] ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation.”  The gospel tells us that we are the redeemed and diverse family of God.  It’s no secret, though, that racial tension still exists.  What many hoped was done has shown that it still seeps through the very contours of our nation.  Some have a blatant disregard and hatred toward different races.  Others have intentionally or unintentionally chosen to move on as if the issues are dealt with.  Some have made decisions that keep setting us back as a nation.  And some—probably most of us—just don’t know what to think, what to do, or what to say.

But as the church, we know the remedy for every ailment.  His name is Jesus and we represent him.  The truth is, though, that many in our community, and many in our church, feel marginalized.  And though we know that part of learning to do good is seeking justice and correcting oppression (Is. 1:16-20), the church has often been silent, allowing many to become disenchanted with the church’s lack of attention to this vital issue.

We’re not naive.  We know that this conversation is filled with more landmines than we can see.  But we are a family.  And in Christ we are one.  So we are going to talk about it.  We are going to ask God to give us his heart.  We are going to cry together, repent where necessary, hug when needed.  And we are going to seek his direction, asking for a faith that steps forward in confidence, knowing that he who began a good work in us will carry it on to completion.

We hope you’ll join us at 6pm on Sunday evening, September 18th for this first gospel forum.  Charlie Mitchell from Epiphany Church Baltimore will be joining us to help navigate through the evening.  We don’t expect to walk out of that night with everything figured out, but we do trust that we’ll be able to leave that night stirred by the Holy Spirit, with some answers as well as practical gospel steps forward.

Summit Church, thanks for being the type of church that cares about every man, woman, and child.  Lets continue to ask the Father to give us eyes to see what he is doing, ears to hear what he is saying, and hearts ready to respond to all of it.
