December 2022 - Reading Plan

In conjunction with our Advent series entitled “The God We’ve Waited For”.  We will spend this month reading through the Scriptures that will help us maximize this blessed time of Advent.

What is Advent?  Advent comes from the Latin word adventus meaning ‘arrival’ or ‘coming’. The people of God in the Old Testament looked forward to the coming of a Savior/Messiah- Christ’s birth is the first Advent.

On this side of the Cross Christians are waiting expectantly for Christ’s return—the second Advent.

Traditionally, Advent counts down the four weeks leading up to Christmas. Practically, Advent reminds us to look forward to His return every day. In this season we will spend time reflecting on who we were, and what God has promised and delivered through Jesus Christ.  May we also allow the Holy Spirit to reset Jesus Christ as the center of not just the Christmas season but of our lives.

“The Greek word adelphoi often translated as “brothers" refers to "all the children of a family." When Paul calls the gathered Corinthian church "brothers" (e.g., 1 Cor. 1:10), "my brothers" (e.g., 1 Cor. 1:11), "your own brothers" (1 Cor. 6:8), and "my beloved brothers" (1 Cor. 15 :58), he affirms the close, familial relationship of every member of the church-whether male or female, Jew or Gentile, slave or free. Because we have Christ as our brother and God as our father, we have a sibling relationship with everyone who also belongs to the covenant family.

This means that just as in a biological family, the members of the church family have a common life together. We have mutual responsibilities toward one another, and as we care for one another, we experience–and display–the sibling love of Christ himself. In the local church, we are brothers and sisters. Welcome to the family.”

(Megan Hill, A Place to Belong)

This fall, we are rolling out a new distinctive value at Summit - the value of Family. At Summit, this means…

FAMILY
We are committed to resting in our identity as adopted children of God, caring for one another, and living in biblical community.

As we teach through this in our upcoming series, we’ll take this time in our Reading Plan to highlight the scriptures that point us toward our identity and glorious reality: we are the family of God.

DECEMBER 2021 - READING PLAN

1 The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me,
    because the Lord has anointed me
to bring good news to the poor;
    he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim liberty to the captives,
    and the opening of the prison to those who are bound;
to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor,
    and the day of vengeance of our God;
    to comfort all who mourn;
to grant to those who mourn in Zion—
    to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes,
the oil of gladness instead of mourning,
    the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit;
that they may be called oaks of righteousness,
    the planting of the Lord, that he may be glorified.

Isaiah 61:3

OCTOBER 2021 - READING PLAN

Reading-Plan-October21

Join us this month as we open Paul’s letter to Christians in Rome; a book which has been called “purest gospel”.

Martin Luther said of Romans “It is well worth a Christian's while not only to memorize it word for word but also to occupy himself with it daily, as though it were the daily bread of the soul. It is impossible to read or to meditate on this letter too much or too well.”

We hope that the pure gospel of Jesus radiates through this letter and ‘renews our minds’ as God deals with sin and shows us His mercy in the person and work of His Son.
